1. What is the Asian Network?

At Tesco, 'no-one tries harder for customers' and 'treat people how we like to be treated' are two of our key values and are at the core of everything we do. We help to live these values by making everyone welcome at Tesco and ensuring that our staff have the opportunity to get on, regardless of their ethnicity, gender, age, disability or sexual orientation. The Asian Network is an internal Tesco group that aims to attract and develop talented Asian managers from inside and outside Tesco. We want to support and encourage more Asian colleagues to develop their careers with Tesco and want to let Asians in the wider community know that Tesco is a great place to work.

2. Why do we need an Asian network in Tesco?

We want the best talent to come and work with us from across the country, and for our staff at all levels to reflect the communities we serve.

We already have a very talented group of Asian Managers and would like to have more. We know that British Asians prefer traditional professional careers such as Law, Medicine or Accounting and, as a result, we are missing out on talent from the largest ethnic minority group in the UK - and they are missing out on great careers at retailers like Tesco.

As the biggest Retailer in the UK the breadth of career opportunities Tesco offers is huge and we already employ large numbers of people in these professions. One of the aims of the Network is to try and make people aware of this. The intention is to then take what we learn from the Asian Network and use it to help us develop Tesco into an even more diverse organisation.

3. What are the objectives/vision of the Asian Network?

We want to support and encourage more Asian colleagues to develop their careers with Tesco and want to let Asians in the wider community know that Tesco is a great place to work. We will achieve this by working on specific areas where we feel we can influence the number of Asians joining and getting on at Tesco. These areas are: New Intake, Career Development, Events and Communications. Within these, dedicated workstreams have been set up to look at:

- Graduate and Undergraduate intake: to support Tesco's existing relationships with universities to make sure our message reaches the widest possible audience.

- Mentoring: to make sure Asian colleagues are aware of and take part in opportunities to receive coaching and guidance from a mentor (of any background) in Tesco.

- Events: to bring Asians from across the business together to share knowledge, experiences and to network.

- Communications: to let Asian colleagues know about the support available to develop their careers and to let Asians in the wider community know that Tesco is a great place to work.

4. What sort of support and sponsorship does the network have within Tesco?

We take our People promise, 'Everyone is Welcome at Tesco', very seriously. The Asian Network was launched by Terry Leahy and is supported by leaders across the business.

5. Who should I contact if I have any queries about the network?

Email asian.network@uk.tesco.com, or go to www.tescoasiannetwork.com to get in touch with the Project team.

6. What can I get from the Asian Network?

You can:
- Find out about some of the activities happening that will help you to develop your career within Tesco

- Build up your own personal networks. Get in touch with other Asians in the business with any questions you might have about working and getting on at Tesco.

- Be a part of developing/delivering any of our initiatives, whether it's practical help for one of our events, volunteering to become a mentor, or just providing your views and opinions.

- Visit our website, which has a lot of useful information. You can also email the network with any specific questions you have.

7. Is the network positive discrimination/racism by another name?

No. Tesco ensures that all staff have the opportunity to get on, regardless of their ethnicity, gender, age, disability or sexual orientation. The Network is an attempt to reach out to an audience that has traditionally not seen Retailing as an attractive career choice - and we want to dispel this image.

8. Do you have any targets/measures of success for this initiative?

We have agreed targets for each of the streams to enable us to see how our actions are impacting our overall aims and whether the areas we are working on are the right ones

9. How are you planning to engage Senior Managers and Directors across Tesco to promote this network?

Through regional events which will be held in different parts of the UK over time. The Board are fully engaged and committed to this corporate objective.

10. How can I find examples of Asians who have done well at Tesco?

Visit the website www.tescoasiannetwork.com. This has case studies of a number of Asians in Tesco. If you have any specific questions, e-mail the network.

11. Why an Asian Network - what about other minority groups?

We know that British Asians prefer traditional professional careers such as Law, Medicine or Accounting and, as a result, we are missing out on talent from the largest ethnic minority group in the UK and they are missing out on great careers at retailers like Tesco. As the biggest Retailer in the UK the breadth of career opportunities Tesco offers is huge and we already employ large numbers of people in these professions. The intention is to take what we learn from the Asian Network and use it to help us develop Tesco into an even more diverse organisation.

12. What will I get out of involvement with the Asian Network?

- Build up your own personal networks. Get in touch with other Asians in the business with any questions you might have about working and getting on at Tesco.

13. How can the network help my personal development?

You will be able to connect with other Asians within Tesco who may be able to help with your personal development. You may also wish to be mentored by someone with the knowledge or skills to support you. The website will be able to provide you with further details.

14. I'd like to get involved, but I'm not sure if my manager or team will be supportive - can you help?

This is a corporate initiative with sponsorship and support from Sir Terry Leahy and the Board. Gain an understanding of the Asian network's objectives and activities from the website, decide what type of involvement you would like to have and determine how this would fit around your work commitments. Then discuss this with your line manager to get his/her support.

16. How do I become a member of the Network?

We do not run a formal "membership" scheme. Instead the idea is to get people talking to each other, to share information internally so that people know how to get on and to encourage people from outside Tesco to find out more about us.
