Research for Tesco Asian Network shows that families influence Asian career choices

The Tesco Asian Network today publishes research showing that 1 in 4 British Asian graduates say their families have a significant influence on their job choice - compared to 1 in 10 in the rest of the population.

British Asians may not be surprised to hear that Asian parents picked traditional careers - such as law, medicine and accounting - as the careers they would like their children and grandchildren to pursue. None of them wanted to see their children take up a career at a large retailer.

Tesco believes this may be driven by misconceptions about retailing in the 21st century, compared to 20 or 30 years ago. Tesco is one of a handful of global retailers and is the largest private sector employer in the UK. Thousands of Tesco staff actually work within Tesco in traditional professions such as law and accountancy. The research follows a survey carried out earlier this year which suggested that British Asian graduates significantly underestimated the earning potential in careers in retailing.

Tesco Asian Network publishes fresh research into Asian perceptions about retailing

Asian students may be choosing careers traditionally regarded as popular with Asians because they have inflated expectations of the earnings potential in those careers.

As part of research carried out by Tesco's Asian Network , Asian students on university campuses across the UK were asked about their dream careers. The most popular careers students chose were: accountancy, IT, pharmacy, law and medicine – careers with an average salary of £73,075, given 10-15 year’s experience in the job. But when Tesco asked the students what they thought the average salary was in these careers, they over-estimated by 82% - saying £132,706.

The research also revealed Asian students were not aware of what Tesco had to offer. When asked what they thought they could earn from a career with a company like Tesco, most students estimated between £50,000 and £75,000 a year. But senior managers at Tesco can earn up to £100,000 in addition to receiving a generous benefits package, including bonus, share options and a defined benefit pension scheme. High performing graduate recruits can be earning £47,000 in just their fourth year.
